Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex is introducing three-wheeled electric Trikkes for its public safety patrol to increase visibility and enhance security throughout the campus.
Kenneth Scott, the new director of Public Safety at the BJCC, emphasized the benefits of using the Trikkes, stating that they help bridge the gap between on-foot and vehicle patrols. Trikkes also enhance visibility by positioning officers a foot higher above the ground. Scott described the addition as an innovative approach to raising awareness, fostering community ties, and improving safety.
“Trikkes have a distinctive appearance that captures attention, breaks the ice, and allows security personnel to engage with the public,” said Scott. “I have observed positive interactions where visitors and security staff leave conversations that started about a Trikke, on friendly terms, often addressing each other by name. These interactions help to build relationships and contribute to a safer campus environment.”
In recent years, many colleges and universities have started incorporating Trikkes into their campus security measures. Among the campuses that have reported benefits are the University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University. The BJCC anticipates experiencing similar benefits on its campus by implementing the battery powered vehicles to enhance support for events at Legacy Arena, Protective Stadium, and other BJCC venues, including City Walk BHAM.
“The BJCC is committed to providing an engaging and secure environment for all visitors,” said Tad Snider, executive director and CEO of the BJCC. “Integrating the Trikkes will allow our public safety team to navigate the campus more effectively, increase visibility, and promote a heightened sense of safety, ultimately enhancing the experience for everyone.”
