Renovation work progressing steadily at Sheraton Birmingham Hotel
Date: November 01, 2006
Renovations at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel downtown are well under way, funded with $16
million from a Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex bond issue as well as capital
improvement funds from the hotel's budget.
The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex owns the hotel.
The 18-month renovation project will be completed in five phases. The work will include an
upgrade of the Sheraton Birmingham's lobby, atrium and 757 guest rooms. The ballroom, which
was added in 1998, is not slated for renovation in the current project.
The hotel renovation is part of the BJCC's five-year, $39 million upgrade, which is scheduled for
completion in 2007.
Major projects in the complex include the addition of the Arena Club, improvements to extend
compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, cleaning of the exterior walls, renovations to
the concert hall, and new lighting and landscaping.
At the hotel, four of the five presidential suites already are finished and construction on a new
lobby is under way. The renovated lobby area will include an Internet cafe called "The Sheraton
Link" and a Yahoo media center.
The Sheraton Birmingham already has completed upgrades of more than a dozen meeting
spaces and two board rooms.
